Get an SRT file
from any video
Add your video, let the AI find the words, and download the subtitles as an SRT, VTT or text file. Use them on YouTube, in a player, or anywhere that asks for a subtitle file.
- SRT, VTT and TXT
- Made in your browser
- No watermark on the file
1
00:00:00,000 --> 00:00:02,640
Most videos get watched with the sound off.
2
00:00:02,640 --> 00:00:05,880
So the words on screen do half the work.
3
00:00:05,880 --> 00:00:08,120
Here is how to get them in a minute.How to get your file
- 1
Add your video
Upload a file or paste a link in Auto Caption. The AI listens to the speech and writes down every word with its time.
- 2
Check the words
Your video appears with its captions and a transcript beside it, so you can see everything that was found before you take the file.
- 3
Download the file
Under "Caption file", pick SRT for YouTube and most players, VTT for the web, or plain text for just the words.
What you can download
SRT
The most widely used subtitle format. YouTube, Facebook, Vimeo and most video players and editors take it.
VTT
The format web video players use, for putting subtitles on your own site.
Plain text
Just the words, with no times, for a transcript, a blog post or notes.
Word timings
On the Auto Caption page you can also download a JSON file with the time of every single word.
Good to know
- The file is made in your browser from the words you see. Nothing extra is sent anywhere to make it.
- Finding the words uses your plan's processing minutes, by the length of the video. The free plan includes 60 a month.
- It works for videos spoken in many languages: the subtitles are in the language of the speech. Pick the language page below for yours.
- Clips from AI Clipping have the same download in their Captions tab, with any words you fixed and any parts you cut already applied.
Subtitles in the video, or beside it
A subtitle file is the words of a video with the time each one shows, kept apart from the picture. A platform shows them when a viewer turns subtitles on, and the viewer can pick a language if you have more than one. That is different from captions burned into the video, which are part of the picture and always show.
Auto Caption makes both. Download the file for the platforms that take one, and export the video with styled captions for places where people scroll with the sound off, like TikTok, Reels and Shorts.
Each subtitle line is cut where a speaker pauses, where a sentence ends, or after 7 words, so lines stay short enough to read at a glance.
Questions about subtitle files
What is an SRT file?
A plain text file with numbered subtitle lines, each with the time it starts and ends. It is the most common subtitle format, and YouTube, Facebook and most editors accept it.
Can I get the file without burning subtitles into the video?
Yes. Download the SRT or VTT on its own. Burning styled captions into the picture is a separate option, in the same page.
Is it free?
There is no charge for the file itself. Finding the words uses processing minutes from your plan, and the free plan includes 60 a month.
Which languages does it work in?
Many: the AI writes the words in the language the video is spoken in. See the language pages for Spanish, Portuguese, Arabic, French, German and Italian.
Can I translate the subtitles into another language?
Not as a file download today. The file is in the language of the speech.
Where do I upload an SRT file?
On YouTube, open the video in Studio, go to Subtitles and choose Upload file. Facebook, Vimeo and most video players and editors also have an upload or import option for it.
