SRT file
A plain-text caption file: numbered lines, each with a start and end time and the words shown then. YouTube takes it as a basic subtitle format.
SRT stands for SubRip Subtitle. Each caption is a block: a number, a line with the start and end time (hours:minutes:seconds,milliseconds), then the words, then a blank line. Because it is plain text, you can open and fix one in any text editor.
YouTube lists .srt among its basic subtitle formats, and supports .vtt (WebVTT) with limited styling. A caption file sits apart from the video, so viewers can turn it off; captions burned into the picture cannot be turned off.
