How Many Clips Can You Get from a One-Hour Video?

There is no fixed number of clips in an hour of video. Learn what decides it, a quick way to count your own, and how many to post a week from one recording.

People often ask for a number: ten clips, twenty, fifty. The honest answer is that it depends on what is in the hour. This post explains what decides it, gives you a quick way to count the clips in your own video, and suggests how to spread them out.

In short: count the self-contained moments, not the minutes. A talk-heavy hour with many questions and stories can give a dozen or more good clips. A single long demo may give two. Post fewer, better clips and spread them over weeks.

What decides the number

  1. How many separate ideas the video has. An interview with ten questions has ten starting points. A lecture on one theory has one idea told at length.
  2. How well each idea stands alone. A clip has to make sense to someone who has not seen the rest. Answers that begin with "as I said earlier" do not count.
  3. Energy and clarity of speech. Clear, quick speech cuts well. Long pauses, crosstalk and background noise do not.
  4. How strong the first sentence is. If a moment has no opening line that makes people stay, it needs more work than it is worth.
  5. Your own taste. A clip you would not share yourself is not a clip.

A quick way to count

Play the video at 1.5 times speed (or read its transcript) with a notepad. Each time you think "someone should hear this on its own", write down the time. At the end, check each note against three questions:

  • Can a stranger follow it in one go?
  • Does it start strongly within two seconds?
  • Does it end where the thought ends?

The notes that pass are your clips. An AI clipping tool does the same pass for you: Clip-Short can propose up to 20 clips from one video, each with a score and a short reason, and you keep the ones that pass your three questions.

Longer clips and shorter clips

The same hour can give you different counts depending on length. Short answers of 20 to 40 seconds give more clips. Fuller stories of one to two minutes give fewer, but they carry more of the idea. If your goal is to be found, a mix of both works well. If your goal is to earn from the platform, check that platform's own rules on length and originality first; the rules differ and change.

How many to post, and when

More clips is not the aim. One good clip a day for a week beats seven in an hour. A simple pattern:

  • Post the strongest clip first, since it shows people what you do.
  • Space the rest over two to four weeks.
  • After each batch, look at which clips held viewers longest and clip more of that kind from your next video.

Keep the unposted ones. A clip you do not use today can be the one that works next month.

Make the count bigger without lowering quality

If your video has too few moments, you can ask the tool to look for something specific, for example "the moments where the guest tells a story". Clip-Short takes an optional prompt for this and can look again with a new one. You can also build one stronger clip from a single moment by trimming the lead-in and fixing the captions.

Questions

Is a longer video always better for clips? No. A focused 20-minute conversation can give more good clips than a rambling two hours.

Should I clip my whole back catalogue? Start with the videos that did well. Their topics already work for your audience.

Can I use the same clip on more than one platform? Yes. Reframing once to 9:16 covers Shorts, TikTok and Reels; check each platform's caption area before you post.
