What Is a Voice Clone?

A voice clone is an AI voice made from recordings of one real person, so a text-to-speech system can read any script in that person’s voice.

A voice model learns how one person sounds, their tone, accent and rhythm, from a recording, and then speaks new text in that voice. Creators use it to narrate many videos without recording each one, or to dub their own videos into other languages.

Cloning someone else’s voice without permission can mislead viewers and break platform rules. YouTube asks creators to disclose realistic content that makes a real person appear to say something they did not; it also says cloning your own voice for voice-overs or dubs does not need disclosure.

Clip-Short’s own-voice feature, on paid plans, is made from one recording of you reading a sentence we show, with three random words in it, and is kept only if that sentence was heard, so it can only be the voice of the person agreeing. It does not clone other people’s voices.

Questions

Is voice cloning legal?

Cloning your own voice is common. Cloning another person’s voice without permission can break the law where you are and platform rules; ask the person first.

Do I have to disclose a cloned voice on YouTube?

Not for your own voice used for voice-overs or dubs, YouTube says. Making a real person seem to say something they did not needs disclosure.

How much audio does a voice clone need?

It depends on the system. Some work from one short recording; others ask for many minutes.

Can Clip-Short clone a celebrity’s voice?

No. Its own-voice feature records you reading a sentence it shows and keeps the voice only if that sentence was heard.

Which plans have Clip-Short’s own voice?

Paid plans. Each account can make up to 3 voices, and own-voice videos are held to 3 minutes because the voice service is slower than the stock voices.
