Aspect ratio calculator

Type a video size to get its aspect ratio, the size it needs in another shape, and how much of the picture a crop from one shape to the other keeps.

Sizes are rounded to even pixels, which most video encoders need.

Aspect ratio

16:9

Largest 9:16 crop of your video

608 × 1,080

Keeps 31.6% of the picture

Export size for 9:16, 1080 on the short side

1,080 × 1,920

A 9:16 crop keeps only 31.6% of this picture. A crop fixed in the middle cuts people off as soon as they move, so the crop has to follow the subject from shot to shot.

How it works

  1. 1

    The ratio

Width and height divided by their greatest common divisor: 1920 x 1080 is 16:9. A size that is not exact shows the common shape it is closest to.

  2. 2

    The crop

The largest frame in the new shape that fits inside yours, and the share of the picture it keeps.

  3. 3

    The export size

The new shape with 1080 pixels on its short side, the size the apps list for vertical, square and portrait video.

Questions about aspect ratios

What is aspect ratio?

The shape of a picture, written as width to height. 16:9 is wide, 9:16 is vertical, 1:1 is square and 4:5 is the tall portrait shape used in feeds.

What aspect ratio is 1920 x 1080?

16:9. Turned on its side, 1080 x 1920 is 9:16, the vertical shape of TikTok, Reels and Shorts.

What size is 4:5 in pixels?

1080 x 1350 at 1080 pixels wide. 1:1 is 1080 x 1080 and 9:16 is 1080 x 1920.

How much does a 16:9 video lose when cropped to 9:16?

At the same height a 9:16 crop keeps 31.6% of the width: 608 x 1080 out of 1920 x 1080. That is why the crop has to follow the subject.

How do I change a horizontal video to vertical?

Crop it to 9:16 and keep the subject in the frame. Clip-Short's Reframe does this for a whole video, following the person or the action from shot to shot.
